Changes affect all businesses
These new fire safety rules are now in force and the main effect of the changes are for a greater emphasis on fire prevention in all business premises in England and Wales.
The new rules state that responsibility for complying with the Fire Safety order will rest with the employer and any other person who has control of any part of the premises. Responsibility for enforcement of the new rules will be with the local fire and rescue service authority who are carrying out regular inspections, with top priority going to those premises presenting the most risk to the community.
These new safety rules look at the risks arising from all fires and other emergency incidents and at the options for reducing and managing them. The responsible person will be expected to have a fire risk assessment carried out, which must focus on the safety in the case of a fire. Particular attention must be paid to area’s at special risk and must include consideration of any dangerous substances likely to be on the premises.
